Your Questions About Renewable Energy Companies

Jenny asks…

How do Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) work?

Is it an incentive to use renewable energy?

admin answers:

The basic idea that people who feel bad about something can buy them to get rid of the guilt.

The way that they work is that a very small amount (much less than the subsidies and tax breaks given to politically correct energy) of money goes to those who operate a wind turbine or solar panel (or even methane gas recovery systems at landfills, sometimes things that would have to be built regardless of whether any carbon credits were sold), the amount of money that the carbon offset actually provides is really too small to actually encourage use of politically correct energy, especially when you consider how much bigger the subsidies are (and they really are over-subsidised compared to how much energy they produce).

Of course there are renewable energy credit systems that do actually help, just that they cost so much more that the frauds out compete them (and governments don’t seem too interested in keeping that sector honest, some such schemes are actually run by the government, including some that sell more renewable energy than they actually generate (in other areas of the economy the word used for that is fraud)).

The main purposes that renewable energy credits serve are to act as indulgences and to help fool people into believing that fossil fuels can be replaced without using nuclear power (which thereby prevents fossil fuels from actually being replaced and keeps the coal and oil companies in business).

James asks…

University major in renewable energy social marketing?

I am looking for a university that has something to do with communication, marketing, and basically just telling companies to use renewable energy and which is suitable.
NOTE: I am NOT looking for anything related to engineering and such

What I need:
1. The majors surrounding the renewable energy in social marketing, etc.
2. The best universities in that major on renewable energy

Your Questions About Renewable Energy

Betty asks…

why is it important to have renewable energy?

Which types of renewable energy are being utilized in the US and which are in the “design” phase?

admin answers:

One type of renewable energy for cars is the hydrogen fuel cell. Hydrogen is all around us making it easy to get, plus as an added bonus it doesn’t emit any CO2 emissions. The only thing that comes out of the exhaust is water. Honda has released a hydrogen fuel cell car for lease. It’s called the Honda FCX Clarity. There are four problems that need to be overcome with this source of energy. One is to make hydrogen fuel pumps easily available. Two is to make the car travel more than two hundred miles before refueling. Third is to make the Hydrogen more safe to transport. Hydrogen is more combustional than gasoline. And forth is to make the hydrogen cost a less.

I am looking for renewable energy companies that trade on the stock market?

Does any one know any renewable Energy companies that trade on the stock market. I am having a hard time finding them.
Do you have any idea how I can find any more names?

admin answers:

Yahoo Finance or MSN Money are good and free tools you can use. Just search for ‘renewable energy’ or ‘green’ companies. Good example of one start up that is getting lots of attention is Beacon Corp (BCON).

Your Questions About Renewable Energy Companies

Linda asks…

To get into Renewable energy, what is the best degree for me to study?

Is it better to study ‘Green energy technology’ at Leicester uni, or study an engineering degree, probably electrical eng?
Or if there are any other courses you suggest….? and why?
Or is there any point wanting to go into the renewable energy sector? will we ever actually turn to green energies? or will big oil/gas/nuclear companies rule what we do, and not allow us to move forward in a green way?

admin answers:

If you REALLY want to help out the renewable energy sector, become a top-notch electrical engineer. Then, revolutionize our capacitor technology.

That is one of main things keeping renewables as a second-tier resource. With wind farms and solar stations especially, our present capacitor capabilities will forbid them from ever becoming anything more than an aid. They will NEVER be able to replace all the coal/oil/gas/nuclear… Unless you go out and design us some rockstar capacitors. Inefficient energy storage is the killer.

And those companies don’t “rule what we do.” C’mon now. Look at what renewables are actually capable of with our present technology. They are not a fantastic cure-alls.

Besides, power companies are diversifying their sources more and more everyday. GE and AREVA are huge energy players, and both are integrating renewables into the designs. Our energy sources will have to play nice with each other until our technology progresses further. It’s not all or nothing.

Susan asks…

Geothermal energy is often the great hope of renewable energy as it can be continuously and reliably produced?

Geothermal energy is often the great hope of renewable energy as it can be continuously and reliably produced 24/7. While it it has the best potential, it is very limited geographically. The best geothermal resources are in Alaska and California, and the best potential resources are west of the Rockies. How do we overcome the geographic limitations of geothermal energy?

admin answers:

The simple answer to your question is: ‘dig deeper in the ground.’ There are several companies out there at present that are willing to install geothermal energy suppies into the home. I live in England and I have had pumps installed in my gym. I save hundreds of pounds each year in electricity bills. Unfortunately I can only source my knowledge onto the e-book that I purchased but if you have any more questions about this please email me and I will answer the question to the best of my ability. Hope this helps.

Lizzie asks…

what can an industrial engineering doing in field of Renewable energy?

Dear all
I study industrial and systems engineering and I really want to work on Renewable energies but unfortunately I could not find any common field between my field of study and Renewable energies.
I was wondering if you could guide me to find a common field.

admin answers:

I remember from a television program I watched, that a little realized truth is that everything that gets manufactured, has a design. Everything has to come about in some real way, and that happens by design; I suppose that is a way of saying, that everything and anything could be done in more than one physical way, so, a specific way–a design-always has to be chosen, to be devised.

With whole systems like with energy systems renewable or otherwise, wouldn’t that “design” be something amounting to some kind of engineering one?
So, wouldn’t any such system, and maybe whole lots of the components, really have to be created by “industrial engineering” or “systems engineering”?

Industrial engineering, or systems engineering: term I’m not sure I specifically understand, and i’d guess they could (?) be more to do with engineering huge systems like factories to work efficiently or correctly? Well if so, wouldn’t doing that for the renewable energy companies you mention, be a kind of work fitting what you’re looking for? Aren’t big companies constantly striving to keep those systems working, or improved?
Or smaller companies that might not have their own engineers of your sort, must have to hire some kind of outside company. Wouldn’t they, to get that done to make it possible for them to build…or even to plan to build.

Research and development itself, too, just to consult or for the consultants to consult with, too , right?

The last i heard, although probably engineers aren’t credited or sometimes even noticed all that much, our lack of ability (unlike on tv shows) to just wave a magic wand and bring things into being, must mean that engineers actually, are “everywhere!”

Susan asks…

Who are some important people in renewable energy history?

I need to do a biography on a significant person in renewable energy, but I can’t find anything on the Internet. Could you please send me a site where I can find a biography?

admin answers:

Look up T. Boone Pickens. He is a former oil man and corporate raider who has a ton of money and wants to do wind farms all over the place.

He became famous in the 1980’s be acquiring big oil companies then selling them off (in whole or in part) and made a ton of money.

Lizzie asks…

What will it take to change the way we consume energy on a mass scale?

From oil to coal we seem to be consuming energy from non-renewable sources. Do the major energy companies have a solution for a post-oil world? Does industry have a plan in place for producing goods when the lights go out? Are we just going to sit around and wait for the wells to go dry?

admin answers:

Individually, be aware of where of you dispose everything . Recycling has a major impact on our environment and it is also a political statement from the community. Politicians pay attention to your demands with the environment, now. Also , be aware of how alternative fuels work ahead of time, so when they become available you can demand either ethanol or biodiesel as a your choice of fuel. If the demand is big enough, the suppliers will produce.

Your Questions About Renewable Energy World

Mark asks…

Where in the world is there undergraduate degrees in renewable energy and/or sustainability?

I’ve already found a few, such as the University of New South Wales – Photovoltaic/solar energy degree. However, I would like to fully know all my options for undergraduate degrees in solar energy/wind energy/renewable energy etc. Most other programs I’ve found have been standard engineering degrees, which lead to graduate work in the subject. Any university in the world is the scope, as I’m not committed to residing with the United States.

I think Slippery Rock University

George asks…

Can you make money by buying stocks of renewable energy companies?

since global warming and the need for more greener energy like wind power increases, is it really possible you can make lots of money by buying these companies now that are worth virtually nothing, and wait until the world gets the need of renewable energy? (buying shares of stocks). Thanks

admin answers:

Nobody can predict the movement of any stocks whether going up or coming down. Many of the market professionals use fundamental analysis of companies along with technical analysis like chartology, option movements and relative price strength of stocks.

There might be many people who think the same logic as yours and made investment in renewable energy companies. Consequently, some of these companies’ shares have gone up significantly where you might have to find a good spot to buy at certain time.

What you need to do is to study the company’s performance (revenues and earnings and their growth) in relation to the stock price. Also, look into the company’s financial condition (does it have a lot of debts?), market share of its products, product leadership, and earnings browth rates vs. Its competitors.

Since you will be investing your hard earned income, be very careful in doing the preliminary studies before investing. I recommend you also read a couple of books on investment.

Daniel asks…

Where to start for Investment Banking hopefuls?

I am a college junior with a summer’s experience in investment management of renewable energy companies. Where should I look to gain knowlege in career advice for investment bank analyst? A specific reference to website, forum or books would be appreciated.

admin answers:

The Valut.com career IB guide is a great resource for anybody interested in investment banking. I would also suggest you attend information sessions hosted by all of the banking firms at your college or university. The campus recruiting process is fairly rigid and you must adhere to the process very carefully. Many firms will not consider applicants who did not attend their on-campus information sessions. For companies that participate with your school’s career office, look there first for investment banking career opportunities. Be sure to also submit applications to firms that don’t recruit at your university. This can be a numbers game, so the more applications you submit, the better your chances of landing a job. A high GPA is very important to investment bankers, so be sure to keep on top of that. One of the classic books on an interview prep reading list is called Liar’s Poker.

Sharon asks…

What’s the name of the wind and solar energy companies… How can I buy stock?

I want to invest in the clean and renewable energy but I don’t know how? Don’t know the names of the companies?

admin answers:

It’s not a good idea to invest in individual stocks, or even sectors, unless you really understand what is going on. If you are an adult, you can buy stock in companies through scottrade, etrade, td ameritrade, or a similar online broker. But do your homework first, unless you are just playing and can afford to lose all the money. For example, if you had this mindset at the end of 2007, you might have bought Suntech Power, the world’s largest maker of solar panels, for $90 a share. So let’s say you bought 100 shares for $9000. Today, Suntech is still the largest maker by wattage, last I checked, but the stock is at 0.80. So your investment would be worth $80. Just saying.

There are exchange-traded funds such as (stock symbol) TAN, which invest in solar. I’m not saying to go out and buy shares in it, but do research into it to see the list of companies they picked. You can do similar things with other alternative energy ETF’s.
